Birth of Dress a Girl Around the World Hong Kong Chapter

On the 9th September 2010 my vision for Dress A Girl Around the World  Hong Kong Chapter was born. The birth took place at our Vine Church Pluster/Cell/Home group at 9.30am. That morning we cut out our first 20 dresses and started to put together 4 of them as we only had 2 sewing machines.

Our Hong Kong Chapter is affilated with Dress A Girl Around the World in the US.

Let me fill you in on how this came to be.

My daughter Melinda shared with me how our friend Rachel had started this project by turning  pillowcases/slips into dresses. This project has been going for just under a year and in that time groups around the US have sprung up and come together and  made and sent nearly on 10,000 dresses to approximately 20 countries around the world. This is their website
www.dressagirlaroundtheworld.com

When I first saw this site I became so excited because I knew immediately this was what I wanted to be invloved in. I did not how but I knew this was a must.  I wrote to the" contact us" site and explained who I was and that I lived in Hong Kong. I received back an email from Rachel saying yes we know Melinda we have known her since she first come on our mission trip to Russia when she was eighteen. So you could imagine how blown away I was.

I have said I knew this project was a must, The more I spoke with Rachel the more I wanted to be invloved. Father God has ignited a fire and a passion within to see this progect here and I can also see is growing in other countries as well.

I was asked if I would like to head up the Hong Kong Chapter, I mulled this over in my mind I prayed about it and each time I took it to Father God the answer came back "So what are you waiting for".

When I spoke with friends I just knew that we in Hong Kong would be making an impact. Each time I talk about it the eyes of the person light up and they want to be apart of this as well.
My vision is to see the girls around the Asia Pacific Rim to have a dress of their own which is made with love from a person in Hong Kong. As we make these dresses we will modify them for each of the countries they go to for we are aware that some countries do not allow the girls to bare their skin.

We so often take for granted that little girls have their own dresses and their own dolls but more often than not in many countries around the world girls do not have these. So we are making the hand made dresses along with hand made cloth dollls that in turn will bring joy.

What I thought was a tiny vision has turned out not to be so, it keeps expanding and this so excites me.  I am learning to take my hands off and let Father God do what He does best. I know this is His baby and I know we are the hands that can bring this about.
So what has happened since the 9th September. My wonderful hair dresser has put a sign up in her salon and ladies keep dropping off pillowcases/slips. From this an other group will be started in Stanley at the end of the month with the ladies she teachers hairdressing too. I will  be going down with her to show the ladies how to make these dresses. I envisage more groups coming together from this.
A third group will be starting on the 1st Tuesday of October.

I have spoken to a pastor who would like dresses made for the girls and women in Mongolia. These dressses will be made out of warm material.
We have been asked to make 200 dresses to go with a Mission team from Switzeland to Rawanda in March 2011.
The creativness in the groups is growing like a flower in a most amazing garden. We are using bed linen, a friend is bringing back material from China.
Some groups of children/teenagers also want to be involved.

Do you want to become involved? Do not worry if you don't sew we can show you how. So don't limit yourself. Create your own group.

Can we help you bring joy and happiness to girls around the world.
